Strata-Cut Work
Strata-Cut is a unique form of Stop-Motion animation in which a block or “loaf” of clay is constructed with the animation built into its physical geometry. This is done by pre-conceiving how the shapes in the animation would flow through time and then sculpting a representation of that in clay. Then, thin slices are cut from the loaf with a picture of it’s face being taken after each slice. Upon playback, the animation is revealed.
This is similar to how an MRI looks but in Strata-Cut, the animation is intentional and created by hand. I call these loaves “Time Loaves” or “Time Sculptures” because the movement and animation is frozen in time in a physical medium. I build and animate all my loaves by hand and slice them with either a sharp knife or a custom guillotine I built for my Strata-Cut animations.
